I worked with the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation on a number of projects over the years. I was excited to be asked to design their booth on the farm at the Del Mar Racetrack for the San Diego Fair. They wanted the booth to have a DIY plant bar, and to showcase reclaimed and repurposed materials. Well, EVERY piece of this booth was reclaimed or repurposed, all the way down to the screws that hold it together. I used old chalkboards for signage, I made planters out of stacks of books, toys, and even an old baseball. I designed a rain gutter garden, that was irrigated on a timer from a bucket hidden in the base. The water drained down through the rungs via a hidden drain on each rain gutter section, until the excess poured back into the bucket to be repumped back up into the plants. The gutter garden pump, timer, fan to keep the booth cool, and globe light hanging from the top of the tent, were all powered by a mini off-grid solar unit behind the booth. The rest of the booth was built out of old pallets and fence wood, and designed to be modular for future use.
