What is Small Axe?
Small Axe is an idea my wife Andrea and I came up with, as a way for our family to give back. As the family behind Rattle-N-Roll.com, we had long dreamed to expand our use of awesomeness, to raise awareness and funds for needs and causes that don’t get the attention they deserve. So we came up with Small Axe. We had talked endlessly about a million grand ideas, and we may yet carry them all out. But the time had come for us to put up, or shut up. They say “every little bit counts”, and we intend to find cool ways to liberate you all, of that “every little bit”. Together, we are GOING to make a difference. One small act at a time. Stay tuned, this is gonna be fun…
In the meantime, if you have a skill, a service, an idea for our next project or cause, just wanna say hi, or any other way to help us keep this wagon rollin’, head on over to our Contact page and drop us a line, We’d LOVE to hear from you!
ZEKE KENDALL - HEART TRANSPLANT
Zeke Kendall was a normal, healthy 19 yr old. He got sick one night and, low and behold, had full-on congestive heart failure. He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center and had an artificial heart put in his chest while he awaited a donor heart. Through it all, he remained unbelievably positive, and the smile on his face is a testament to one amazing spirit! We designed this little notebook for Zeke, and 100% of all profits went to COTA to help with his transplant related expenses.
Dailard Elementary - Community Mural
I was asked to design a 700 sq ft mural for Dailard Elementary in San Carlos. The mural was to represent the joy of learning, and to feature some of the natural elements of the surrounding community, which is located near Mission Trails and Lake Murray in San Diego. The goal was to design it in phases of difficulty, so that we could have kids from the school and families from the community help in painting it. We traced projections of the phases onto the wall at night, so kids could paint during the day. I used Small Axe to source equipment, materials, and volunteers to get the project done. In the end, we ended up having over 70 volunteers ranging in age from 3 to 80! The project got coverage on NBC news and they asked me to paint murals all over the school the following year.
READ ORANGE COUNTY - 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
READ Orange County is OC's oldest adult literacy program, and when they announced that they were going to throw an event to commemorate their 20 year anniversary, I knew I wanted to help out. I used Small Axe to source funding to make an invitation and poster project a reality. I had heard that they operate on a shoestring, and I wanted their 20 years of service to our community to be represented in the light it deserved. It truly was an honor to be a part of an event that celebrated their amazing contribution.
